If I ever have a boy

Because he will not understand that

Fear doesn’t make you any less
Of a person
I will teach him to not be ashamed
Of the things he likes
And to pursue things with a humility
And keep your head bowed
But keep your heart proud
I will not tell my child
He’s anything less
Than my son
Ill tell him I love him
And even though there will be some who don’t think so,
in my eyes, hes perfect
And that will be enough.

A personal post about fathers.

My father was 20 when I was born. He went off to college in Arizona soon after, and I went to live with my mother’s parents.
My grandparents have raised me since I was 8 months old.

I recall visiting my father in Arizona numerous times. I remember spending the night at his apartment. I remember the snow. I remember the music he would play in his car whenever we went somewhere “far”.

My father (having returned to California) remarried when I was 11. Then, he had two more children… beautiful girls. That was when the music and car rides stopped.

Now, my grandfather. I called him Poppy as a child and still do to this day. He owns his own business. He works from home…upstairs in his office. For my entire life, he has payed for every dance class, every voice lesson, every vacation, every amusement park ticket, every college class, every piece of clothing and most every meal I eat. He has also attended every show even if I was only in one number. He is also the first one I see when I come out from backstage, standing there with a bouquet of roses. He is also the one who tells me how talented and beautiful I am when I come home crying. He is also the one who will stop whatever he is doing in the office to come downstairs and watch a movie with me because I had a bad day. He also visited me when I was in the hospital almost every day.

My Poppy is not my father. He is not even my grandfather by blood…but by marriage.
Yet he is everything and more than what I was born expecting a father to be.

My biological father is not a terrible man. I do not hate him in any way. I know that he has come a long way. He has discovered Christian faith. He has a family that he lives with and supports.
And I am just not a part of that. And that is okay.
Our ship sailed a long time ago. And that is okay.

So…to both my Poppy and my father: Happy Father’s Day. I love you both. True, in very different ways. But I believe a different kind of a love is much different than no love at all.
You have both taught me life lessons. And you have both loved me to the extent that each of you could. And I THANK YOU for that.
